Stainless Steel 321 is an austenitic stainless steel which is stabilized with titanium. The titanium enhances the intergranular corrosion of the stainless steel 321 Instrumentation fittings. They are excellent for applications requiring high temperatures of up to 815 degrees Celsius. The addition of titanium also helps in the stabilization of the fittings against chromium carbide formation. Titanium carbide forms within the grain rather than at the grain boundaries because titanium has a greater affinity for carbon than chromium. While it has equal corrosion resistance as stainless steel 304/304L instrumentation fittings when annealed, it has better creep and stress rupture qualities, making it appropriate for pressure vessels and boilers. For sustained use at high temperatures, stainless steel 321 instrumentation fittings are nonmagnetic and heat resistant. Heat treatment will not harden stainless steel 321 instrumentation fittings; only cold working will. It can be welded using any regular process, and no post-weld annealing is necessary. This item is ductile and can be easily moulded. While stainless steel 321 instrumentation fittings have high corrosion resistance, especially against dilute organic acids, it is not appropriate for chloride solutions due to pitting and crevice corrosion.
