UNS S31803 is ferritic-austenitic microstructure duplex steel. The alloy contains approximately 40–50 ferrite in its annealed state. The duplex microstructure combines the strength of ferritic steels with the corrosion resistance of austenitic steels. The metal is frequently employed as a viable remedy for chloride-induced stress cracking. The alloy has excellent resistance to corrosion in saltwater and most sulfuric acid concentrations. Furthermore, it is sulfide stress corrosion cracking resistant (sour-gas environments). Duplex stainless steel grades are up to twice as robust as austenitic and ferritic stainless steel grades in terms of strength. Duplex stainless steel valves are more formable under pressure and have a longer lifespan than ferrite types.
